Clipboard with Hook on Back: A Buyer's Guide to Hanging Boards

2026-09-17

What a clipboard with a hook on the back is

A clipboard with a hook on the back is a standard writing board with a shaped hook or hanger fitted to the reverse, so the board can be hung on a rail, a peg, a pegboard or the side of a trolley instead of being laid flat. The clip on the front is unchanged; the hook is the extra fitting, and it turns a board that has to be carried into a board that lives where the work happens. Buyers ask for it when the clipboard needs to stay with a location rather than with a person - a picking aisle, a bedside, a service bay, a stock cage.

This guide covers how the hook is fitted, the hook types available, the board and clip choices, and how to specify a hanging clipboard for a particular site.

How the hook is fitted

The hook is usually a metal or plastic fitting, riveted through the back of the board in the same operation that fits the clip. Because it is fixed on the reverse, the front stays flat and the writing surface is not interrupted. On an aluminium-backed board the hook can be formed from the board itself or bolted on; on a PVC or MDF board it is a separate part fixed with rivets or screws, seated so that it does not stand proud of the board and snag on a sleeve.

The position matters. A hook set at the top centre lets the board hang straight and level. A hook set off-centre lets it hang against a wall at a slight angle, which some users prefer because the board sits flatter to the wall and is easier to read at eye level. A board that will be written on while it is hanging needs the hook positioned so that the board does not swing when a hand presses on the top of the paper.

The hook types buyers ask for

There are three families in common use. A plain hook or J-hook hangs on a rail or a bar, and it is the cheapest and the most common. A rotating hook can be turned, so the board hangs on a horizontal rail in one position and on a vertical peg in another, which suits a site that moves boards between two kinds of storage. A keyhole plate, a flat plate with a shaped slot, hangs on a screw head or a nail and can also take a lanyard. For a large board the hook may be doubled, with two hangers spaced across the top so the board does not twist.

The right choice comes from the site. A warehouse rail wants a plain hook sized to the rail diameter, so the board cannot jump off when a trolley passes. A ward or a clinic that hangs boards on a bedside peg wants a hook that grips and does not slip off when the board is lifted. A retail stockroom that uses a pegboard wants a hook wide enough to sit on the peg without splitting the sheet. A buyer who is not sure of the rail diameter should measure it and give us the figure, because a hook that is too small will not go on the rail at all.

Where hanging clipboards are used

Warehousing and picking are the largest users. A board hung at the end of an aisle carries the count sheet or the pick list for that aisle, and nobody has to hunt for it. Healthcare is the second: a board hung by a bed or a station stays with the patient or the room, which reduces the number of boards a ward has to own. Workshops and service bays hang boards by the bench so the job card stays with the machine. Retail back-of-house hangs boards by the stock cage for delivery checks. Logistics hangs boards on the trailer or the dock rail for loading sheets.

In each case the logic is the same: the board belongs to a place, and the hook is what keeps it there. A buyer who is replacing a lost-boards problem rather than a broken-clip problem is usually the buyer who asks for a hook.

Sizes, weight and print

Hanging boards are made in the same A4 and Letter sizes as a standard clipboard, and in the larger Foolscap size where a long pick list is used. Weight matters more here than on a desk board, because a heavy board on a thin rail will pull the rail down and a heavy board on a peg will sit at an angle. A PVC board is the lightest option and is usually the pick for a rail; an aluminium board is chosen when the site is rough and the board has to survive being knocked.

Print follows the same routes as a standard clipboard. A single brand colour or a site name is screen printed directly, and short runs or photographic artwork use UV digital printing. Because the board hangs facing out, the print is often read at a distance, so a bold, simple design with a large site name works better than fine detail.

How ZOKABS produces hook clipboards

ZOKABS produces clipboards and writing boards on the same lines as its folder range, and the hook is fitted as part of the assembly rather than added afterwards, so the rivet pattern and the hook position are set from the drawing. Boards can be supplied in rigid PVC, MDF with a sealed edge, or aluminium, with the clip and hook matched to the site brief.

Because the PVC board is made in-house, the sheet thickness, the hook position and the print can all be tuned together for a specific account. A customer who needs a board to hang on a particular rail diameter can send the measurement and we will match the hook to it, which avoids the most common field problem with a hanging board.

Questions buyers ask

Can the hook be added to a standard clipboard?

On a board we make, yes - the hook is a fitting that is set during assembly, so any standard size can be supplied with a hook. On a board from another source it depends on whether there is enough clean material at the top of the back to take the rivets without splitting.

Will a hooked clipboard still lie flat on a desk?

A low-profile hook sits close to the board and lets it lie almost flat, with only a small lift at the top. If the board will be used on a desk as often as on a rail, ask for a low-profile or rotating hook rather than a deep one.

What is the largest board that can hang from one hook?

It depends on the rail and the hook, not only on the board. For a large Foolscap board we normally fit two hangers spaced across the top, which stops the board twisting and spreads the load on the rail.

Can a hooked clipboard also have a punched hole?

Yes. Many of our boards carry both a hook and a keyhole slot or a punched hole, so the same board can hang on a rail, a peg or a nail depending on where it ends up.
